MAY IS “POPPY” MONTH
Commander Bob Zeman is requesting that all Batavia Post 504 Legionnaires, their families, friends volunteer one hour for the purpose of selling poppies. Collection times will be 9:00 a.m to3:00 p.m. daily. Please call Poppy Chairman Troy King at (630) 364-0991 with the day and time of your choice.
All assignments for your contribution will be based in Batavia and we will make every effort to locate it nearest your home. ONE HOUR, PER YEAR of your time for this POPPY PROJECT is urgently needed and appreciatedNOMINATIONS FOR 2010 – 2011 POST OFFICERS: NOMINATIONS for 2010 -2011 Post Officers will occur during our May 18, 2010 membership meeting at 7:00 p.m. Our dedicated officers are experiencing burnout. We need new, younger Post Officers keeping our Post alive. Please volunteer.
Openings are for Commander, Senior Vice-Commander, Jr. Vice-Commander, Finance Officer, Adjutant, Sergeant-At-Arm, Chaplain and Public Relation Officer.
MEMORIAL DAY: Memorial Day Ceremonies will be held at the VFW facilities on May 31, 2010. Wear your caps to show you are a proud Post 504 Legionnaire. Check your local newspaper for updates.
FLAG DISPOSAL CEREMONY: Flag disposal ceremonies will be held prior to our County meeting on May 27.Old, used, torn flags will be disposed in a respectful manner, honoring our U.S. flags. A container marked “Flag Disposal” is located near the entrance of the VFW building. Bring your flags to be disposed and deposit them in this Flag Disposal container.
BOYS STATE AND GIRLS STATE: This June we will be sending 2 boys to Boys State and 2 girls to Girls State as we have been doing for many years. When they return we invite them to give us their experiences at our July meeting at a "pizza party" on July 20th. Come and join the party and see what our post promotes with the Batavia High students.
STANLEY JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP: We will also be awarding our yearly $500 Stanley Johnson scholarship to a Batavia High student. This award is given yearly to a qualified student interested in a medical or nursing field. The scholarship will be awarded at the Batavia High awards event sometime in May by Don Nallenweg. Anyone is welcome. RSVP if you intend to attend. Call Don at 630.406.9331 for more info.COMMANDERS’ MOUNUMENT: On December 5, 2009, our post dedicated a monument honoring our past commanders in the Batavia west cemetery. Stop by and view at your earliest convenience.
The BATAVIA AMERICAN LEGION POST 504 was chartered on August 1, 1920, Ninety (90) years ago!!!!!Since its inception, our Post has been dedicated to its founding principles of:

The American Legion and Batavia Post 504 sponsors educational and youth sports scholarships. We promote Americanism. We participate and financially contribute to worthwhile community programs and projects. We assist financially our needy veterans and their families and volunteer in programs that enrich the quality of life in the Batavia Community. DEDICATION OF MEMORIAL: Dedication of the Memorial, honoring Present and Past Commanders, will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at noon, at the Route 31 cemetery. Please wear your caps. Guest speakers and pastors will dedicate the Memorial. All living Past Commanders are invited to attend. Public attendance is welcomed.

SPECIAL APPEAL TO OUR YOUNGER MEMBERS: Our Post desperately needs the active participation of our younger members. The current leadership is getting older. They have carried on the baton of our Post for many, many years. While their spirit and patriotism is alive, age takes its toll on everyone and they would like to pass the baton to you and keep the rich heritage and history of American Legion Batavia Post 504 alive. You have served your country; please continue to serve your Batavia Post 504. Thank You

and recruiting students to assist our Post for Poppy Day Collections.
STANLEY JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP: Our yearly $500 nursing scholarship was awarded to Staci Clabough who will be attending Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan
AMERICANISM ESSAY CONTEST: Sam Harms was the winner in the 11th District Americanism Essay Contest.
SPECIAL THANKS: Debbie Greco (mother of 3 daughter now serving in the US Navy), together with daughter Samantha, who was n uniform, assisted our Post during our Poppy collection. The Beacon News published their picture on May 27.
MONTHLY MEETINGS: Batavia Post 504 meets every third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the VFW Canteen building. Meetings usually end after 1 to 1 ½ hours. Our Commander’s goal is to encourage every member to attend at least one meeting per year. As mentioned in the above appear to younger members, we need you. Please attend.
